Hi Mr. Gravesen,
I just want to thank you and give you a feedback on my first, and I hope
not last, DIY build: the Discovery 861. I practiced for a few months
before starting the building. But I still had many doubts when I finally
started : I was far from sure to be able to build the speakers properly,
as I wanted them to be not only good sounding but also good looking to
stay in my living room. Well, after the three months it took me to build
the Discovery 861, I can say that I am fully satisfied, the speakers
sound great and look good, at least to my eyes, even though there are
some details I could have worked out better. And the readers can judge
too by the pictures that I send you with this mail.
But the pictures don't tell how the speakers sound. And as I said they
sound great. When I say great though I mean not in absolute terms, but
compared to what I listened to in the last two years. My speakers from
2023 to seven days ago were the Mission 770, that cost more than 4000
euros, while, labor apart, the Discovery 861 costed me around 1600
euros.
Well, the Discovery 861 are by far better than the Mission in all
departments! I enjoyed the Mission, they are not bad speakers at all,
they sound very smooth and warm. But I have to say that I always felt I
was missing something, both in the high and in the low frequencies. Not
so anymore with the Discoveries: The soundstage is bigger, the highs are
higher but not all harsh, lows are tight and full bodied, the sound is
well defined and clear, instruments are very well separated and neat.
Quite impressive is the piano: you can hear perfectly e distinctly the
lines played by both hands.
I am very satisfied! I suppose in order to find factory speakers that
you can compare to the sound of the Discoveries you have to spend around
7-8 thousand euros. Thanks again and I hope to be back to you in a year
or two for another fantastic build of one of your speakers.
Best regards
Gianni
