Hi Troels,
We spoke, many, many times.
Just wanted to let you know that the Faitals are done.
Special thanx to you, for this really great design!! Biggest compliment
I can give is that it doesn't sound like a 3-way. Drivers blend
beautifully.
Takes a long time to break in the drivers (typical to pro drivers and
the suspension they use). Sound was really clear in the beginning,
missing some warmth, but good things to those who wait. Sound is much
fuller and is getting more warmth and body. They have a big wide
baffle... but don't sound like they have. They indeed sound spacious and
3d.
Coming from Amphion argon 7LS, this is an amazing upgrade.
I did a few changes to your design. I made a slotted port, aiming down
to the floor, increasing cabinet strength, and also took away the
possibility for my son to hide toys ;)
I also used better binding posts, from ETI. Pure copper, gold plated, no
nickel. The internal wiring is 2,5mm occ copper from audiophonics in
France. I have had some experience in the past with silver coated wire,
that wasn't positive. I decoupled the speakers with some silicone 3m
discs. 8 per speaker, 4 on top of the stand and for underneath.
I have 2 left hands, which is a Dutch saying for people who can't even
put a painting on the wall, so I called in some help.
Special thanks to Joep Slooten, Joep made the cabinets, the veneer job
he did is amazing, and matched booked beautifully. He also welded the
iron stands, which are also partially filled with sand. I can
wholeheartedly recommend Joep to other ambitious 2 left handers in
Holland, who want to build something amazing, but don't have the tools
or skills. Speakers are made of 18mm birch with bitumen pads.
The filters are soldered and put together by Tony Gee, from Humble home
made hifi & TG-acoustics. As always, Tony's handy work is second to
none. He measured and checked the filters before mounting.
Great project!! Great speaker!! the new 12" version... was just released
half a year too late, but I can't complain :)
