Hi Troels,
My whole life i was building speakers or at
least reading about it. Built in the 80’s giant transmission
line’s with the Richard Allan HPB 12 superbextrene as bass speaker. (HPB
8 mid and AUDAX tweeter (Awesome performance , with regrets sold, but to
big).
Later on several T lines with the kef b139 / b110 / t27, a Vifa Basis,
Last 10 years because of WAF factor a rebuild Kef 104 AB.
Follow your site with much interest.
Over the years speakers get better, filters get better. My youngest son
is a starting music producer with no budget for speakers so i decided to
build something for him.
I choose the faitel 3WC-10 for him as midsize monitor and decided to
build the bookshelf 3wc scanspeak for my study.
It was fun to build again, all components and plans thoroughly
delivered. Super well packed, big compliment. As far as the speakers,
I’m very impressed by the bookshelf speakers, can recommend it for
any-one, brilliant idea, is for a lot of people a real life solution,
and no compromise on sound.
The Faitel 3WC -10 is more difficult to give an opinion about. Partially
this comment is from my son. He uses a b&wdm 302 passive and a elac
active speaker as near field monitors.
As you always point out, the room is half the sound so what is causing
what. Mid’s and high's are pleasant, not harsh ay any level but fairly
present, sound stage is perfect. Bass is a bit disappointing, it’s all
there but misses an bit on the sub side. For classic music/ jazz etc its
very good, pop music give’s some flaws.
Perhaps the 12 inch woofer would have been a better decision. As said
could be the room, but the comparison is the 104 AB which somehow gives
a very pleasant bas in my living (high and mid is incomparable, are much
worse than the Faital)
Anyway, the purpose to build him a very neutral , clean and analytic
speaker is successful, depending on his future studio some tweaking is
perhaps necessary, a extra sub when needed. We’ll see. I ‘m thinking of
building the discovery 861 for my living room as substitute for the 104
AB’s.
Keep on the good work, admire your enthusiasm !
Here by some picture’s
I used 18 mm mdc + 3 mm thick oak veneer.
Kind regards,
Robert
