Thanks to you for your priceless contribution to
the DIY Hi-End and still sharing your huge knowledge about this passion
which is music and hi-end sound.
I know your website since years ago, I am 48 years old, and I can
remember about 20's having a look to your unaffordable at that time,
speakers designs.
Coming back to my building, I faced some troubles.
The worst one was trying to get darker the Baltic birch, a big mistake
on my side as it is one of the most difficult woods to apply tinted
Barnitz due to its uneven absorption. After 1 month trying different
technics, I found on internet the reason why and, suggested by my wife,
I took the decision for painting the speakers in mate black, leaving the
wood texture.
The second issue was to make rebates, as there is no good enough wood
workshop in my area, I decided to include screws for wooden plates in
black colour and under flush of the side panels. The inner braces
thickness is the same that the cabinet, 21mm.
All the remaining I strictly followed your instructions. As I work
offshore, it has been a long building process due to several stops in
between.
I found that unexpected distortion in the right midrange driver, I did
wrong its connection to the crossover ( I use to work until late night
because of family's duties, so I guess I was not enough focussed on
that). Once it has been amended, and after using the Audyssey
calibration of my Marantz Cinema 30, I have to tell you that their sound
performance is impressive! Solid and solid acoustic image, a very
detailed mid-high range, they cover all the audible bandwidth but I cut
them off through the software at 40 Hz due to I have 2 JBL Sub 300 and
the Cinema 30 is very powerful, adding I am connecting two amplifiers to
each one.
I worked as sound engineer (I studied electronics but I work on telecoms
field). I have been working with Meyer sound, H&K, EAW, in live events,
so I have a very educated listening skills, but even though I am
astonished about how these speakers can perform every single music style
with a very accurate response, keeping every single instrument on its
proper place regarding the stereo image and how much power and control
of bass are capable of.
I currently am building the Illuminator Center, afterwards two
Illuminator 71 floor standing for my surround channels.
Once again, many thanks for all and I will keep you posted once I
complete the Center and both 71s.
Regards
Antonio Sánchez
