SEAS W15CY001 + HIQUPHON OWI mini monitor | ||||
Built by Remco/The Netherlands Hello Troels, My search for good cabinet building led to the following design: A cabinet build from 11 Slices of 29mm thick birch plywood with different wall-thickness (2 and 3 cm), creating a firm cabinet, with "diffraction ribs" on the inside and quite a nice stripe on the outside. The front is nice calm and natural. In the time these cabinets were build I had temporary mdf cabinets, just the 6 planks. The difference in sound between the mdf- and final cabinet was stunning. The final cabinet sounds cleaner and clearer with even more detail. That was a nice reward! Because of the huge capacitors and even huger wax-coils I added some depth to the cabinet to keep the netto volume around 7,6 liters as you discribe. I had to place the filters on the side wall, the back plate or bottom were not big enough. All in all it was a very nice experiment with great result! Experiment because i have spend 1250,- on a set of speakers i did not even listen too in advance. That is the same amount my Kef XQ1 did cost (in the shop). The little Seas monitors blew them away! The Super monitor is way better in every aspect of sound reproduction i can think of. For me this project has been all about balance. A mix of high quality components to create a very special speaker. For me the super monitor has that balanced mix. Because of the importance of the crossover in a loudspeaker I added wax-coils and did my best on the cabinet to keep up with the quality of the Seas and the remarkable Hiqiphon tweeter. Last but not least I had to consider the quality of the creator, I could not match that. Thank you Troels for
this magnificent sounding piece of art!
Remco, thanks for your comments and pics on your project. I'm pleased to hear it turned out well. 1250 is indeed a serious amount of money for a mini speaker, but I think your investment proved that good crossover components do pay off - and not least, a rock solid cabinet is a key component in making the best of it all. One thing that may add further to the good result is the actual depth of the cabinet, something that became apparent when doing the Ellam-dappo speaker, which had a similar rock solid cabinet - and a lot of depth. Best regards, Troels. |
